Plot summary
Irene Guarry and André Dubail meet in the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon and, pretending to study the paintings, talk about the love they must keep hidden. Irene is married to Charles Guarry, a wealthy businessman many years her senior, and she says her marriage is held together only by convention. André, a lawyer of her own age, wants to speak to Charles, but Irene is afraid of her husband's jealousy and temper, so she decides to stay away from him. Charles has paid an investigator to report on his wife's movements. At a formal dinner, Irene finds André seated across the table from Charles. André explains that he is moving to Paris. Pierre Lassalle, the eighteen-year-old son of a business associate of Charles, is infatuated with Irene and tells her so.

- Greta Garbo recommended Nils Asther, her two-time co-star who was still under contract at MGM, to play her lover André in The Kiss, but the studio gave the part to Conrad Nagel instead.
