Plot summary
Finn, an Irishman in the service of the crime lord Jules Gobert, hires Zee, a contract killer in Paris whom the underworld calls the Queen of the Dead, to eliminate Gobert's rivals in the drug trade. The few pleasures in her life are an old tailor named Tessier, who supplies her disguises, a goldfish, and crossword puzzles. Finn sends her to a nightclub where a gang from Marseille is partying and the American singer Jenn Clark is performing. Jenn, an uninvolved civilian, is blinded in a fall, and Zee spares her. Finn then orders her to kill Jenn at the hospital where she is recovering. Police inspector Sey and his partner Jax are pursuing Jenn's boyfriend Coco, a drug dealer.

- Lupita Nyong'o was cast as the lead of John Woo's remake, a role gender- and race-flipped from the original, but Woo said in November 2019 she left over scheduling conflicts caused by a script rewrite.
- In 1992, Walter Hill and David Giler wrote a remake script for Tri-Star Pictures titled The Killer, dated 6 April 1992, and the press release said it was written for Richard Gere and Denzel Washington.
- Producers feared American audiences would read the hitman-and-detective relationship as homoerotic, so producer Terence Chang suggested casting Hong Kong actress Michelle Yeoh as the police officer to remove that reading.
