Plot summary
In San Francisco, Joe teaches jazz band at a conservatory and comes home to the apartment he shares with his wife Angela. Their marriage is rocky, and the two bicker constantly, most recently over the sounds from the couple who live upstairs. Angela has invited those neighbors, Pina and Hawk, to dinner and is desperate to make a good impression, while Joe would rather confront them about the noise. Pina and Hawk arrive while the argument is still going, and with no wine in the house and Pina's dietary restrictions unchecked, the evening starts badly. Joe needles his guests, who take his bluntness well, and the four begin to warm to one another.
