Plot summary
In 1938 New York, Arthur and Maurice are out-of-work actors who scrape together a living through petty swindles and rehearse their craft whenever they can. A drunken confrontation with the pretentious Shakespearean actor Sir Jeremy Burtom leaves them wrongly accused of abusing a fellow actor, and they slip aboard an ocean liner as stowaways to escape the law. Burtom is a passenger as well. The ship also carries the crooner Happy Franks, who sobs while he sings, an aging professional tennis player named Mr. Sparks, and the first mate Voltri, a mad bomber with a language of his own. Mistaken identities and slapstick follow as the two men try to stay out of sight.
