Plot summary
A passenger and a dog go overboard from a Soviet icebreaker working the Antarctic coast in 1985. During the rescue the ship cannot avoid an iceberg and is damaged. The First Officer, convinced that Captain Petrov runs a lax ship, radios the Ministry in Leningrad, and Petrov is removed from command. A helicopter brings Valentin Sevchenko, an uncompromising new captain who immediately clashes with Petrov over the disorder aboard. Sevchenko sets the crew to work in the ice, and the atmosphere grows heavier: the sailors' nerves give way and conflicts break out. Rescue is not close, and the ship remains among the ice.
