Plot summary
Each school break, David leaves his mother's house in a Texas suburb and flies to Montana to stay with Cal, his father, who lives off the grid. David keeps to his smartphone and texts his mother; at the airport, neither of them seems glad to see the other. Cal is stern with his son and wants him outside and hunting, so David agrees to a pheasant hunt he has no interest in and then to a moose hunt in the snow-peaked mountains, a trip he joins without enthusiasm. They go up into the wilderness with their gear, and a brutal encounter in that country turns the trip into a struggle to survive.
