Plot summary
Józef travels through a dreamlike world by train to reach the sanatorium where his father, Jakub, is dying. He finds the entire facility going to ruin, with no one in charge and no one caring for the patients. Time there does not behave as it should, and the past is reanimated. The sanatorium's many rooms conjure worlds made of Józef's memories, dreams and nightmares. Józef appears as an adult, yet he and the people around him often behave as though he were a child, and the world he moves through mixes the turn of the century with the years before the Second World War.
