Plot summary
In ancient Abyssinia, a princess named Nawa escaped an arranged marriage by trading bodies with a slave girl through a pair of enchanted earrings. Centuries later, in a California suburb, Jessica Spencer is the school's most popular student and its meanest, with her fellow cheerleaders April, Keecia and Lulu around her. A mall trip takes the four cheerleaders into an African-themed shop, where Jessica finds ancient earrings that the owner, Madame Mambuza, refuses to sell; Jessica takes them anyway. That same day a small-time criminal, Clive Maxtone, robs a gas station and picks up an earring Jessica dropped there. Each wears one that night, and the next morning Jessica is in Clive's body and Clive is in hers, while a cheerleading competition and her senior prom are both coming up.

- Adam Sandler served as executive producer on the film and made an uncredited cameo appearance as the Mambuza Bongo Player, a character based on one Rob Schneider had played on Saturday Night Live.
- The Hot Chick was originally rated R by the MPAA, and several scenes were edited out of it to secure the broader PG-13 rating it was released with.
