• Washington Irving met a real army captain named Ichabod Crane in Sackets Harbor, New York, in 1814 while serving as aide-de-camp to Governor Daniel D. Tompkins. He may also have patterned his schoolteacher on Jesse Merwin, who taught in Kinderhook, where Irving spent several months in 1809.
• The Headless Horseman may have been partly based on a headless corpse reportedly discovered in Sleepy Hollow, New York, after the Battle of White Plains and reburied in an unmarked grave in the Old Dutch Burying Ground. A Hessian soldier was recorded decapitated by a cannonball in the battle, though no record documents his body being found.
• Washington Irving is buried in the Old Dutch Church Burying Ground in Sleepy Hollow, just 150 feet from the graves of the local residents who may have inspired his characters.
• Parts of the tale have been traced to European origins: headless horsemen were staples of northern European storytelling, appearing in German, Irish (the Dullahan), Scandinavian (the Wild Hunt) and British legends, including Robert Burns's Scots poem "Tam o' Shanter" (1790) and Gottfried August Bürger's Der Wilde Jäger (1778).
• Other American towns named Sleepy Hollow, in Illinois, Marin County, California, and Wyoming, have street names that reference the story, and the Wyoming town hosts an annual event called Sleepy Hollow Days.
• The original schoolhouse in Kinderhook, New York, is now owned by the Columbia County Historical Society and called the Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse, and the area's modern-day school district is likewise named Ichabod Crane Central School District after the character.
