Plot summary
For more than thirty years Chela and Chiquita have been partners, living in a house they inherited in Asunción, and now the money is gone. They sell the furniture. Chiquita is charged with seeking a loan fraudulently and must report to the city jail, leaving Chela on her own, telling people her partner has gone to stay by the sea while she keeps selling the house contents. Pituca, a neighbor, asks to be driven to the homes of friends who gather for cards and gossip. The Mercedes was Chiquita's to drive and Chela has no license, but she obliges her neighbor, who presses cash on her for fuel. The trips become an informal taxi service, and on one of them Chela meets Angy, a younger woman who asks to be driven out to Itauguá, where her mother is receiving treatment.
