Plot summary
Jane Hardy, a schoolteacher in San Francisco, has a nervous breakdown after a divorce and the death of her mother, and decides to spend the summer in the northern California town of Blackford, in a house her late aunt Rebecca left her. Walter Pritchard, the local attorney who hands her the keys, claims her mother promised him the property and is in no hurry to put the house in her name. Jane sees apparitions of Rebecca and a black hearse that drives into the yard and vanishes, and the townspeople greet her with passive-aggressive remarks. She finds a trunk of Rebecca's keepsakes in the attic and hires Paul, the hardware store owner's son, to help with repairs.
