Plot summary
A holdup in Copenhagen in 1951 leaves two bank clerks shot and the robber running into the streets with the money. Arrested, he insists that he committed the crime by himself. Eyewitnesses say he seemed to be in some kind of trance, which makes the case increasingly strange for investigator Anders Olsen. Olsen learns that the accused, Palle Hardrup, had served time in the same prison as Bjørn Schouw Nielsen. Olsen consults Dr. Dabrowski, a psychiatrist known for his work with hypnosis, and the two of them delve into how far mental manipulation can reach and what a subject can be made to do.

Murderous Trance is based on the true 1950s Danish hypnosis murders, the only known case in which a court proved a hypnotizer guilty and sentenced him for hypnotizing another man to commit a crime.- Director Arto Halonen was among the first to track down the real hypnosis murderer Palle Hardrup, who had changed his name after his 1967 release from prison, and was one of the few people Hardrup agreed to be interviewed by; they met in 1997, twenty years before the film.
