Plot summary
Under Emperor Renzong, a band of European mercenaries travels into China hunting for black powder. A monster attacks the group a short distance north of the Great Wall. William Garin, an Irishman, and Pero Tovar, a Spaniard, are the only survivors, and they cut off one of its arms and carry it along. At the Wall the Nameless Order, the army under General Shao and Strategist Wang, takes the pair prisoner. That order exists to fight the Tao Tei, creatures that came on a meteorite and strike once in sixty years. Ballard, an Englishman who traveled east twenty-five years ago, has stayed in the region since. The commanders are caught off guard when the Tao Tei strike a week early.
