Plot summary
Manhattan, September 2002: five separate stories run alongside one another. Sandie, an accountant, spends a therapy session with Dr. Trabulous, a passive-aggressive psychologist. Avi and Satish, two immigrants from India, take a security assignment protecting a visiting dignitary. Emme Keeler, an ambitious pastry chef, works up a professional pitch for the city's competitive cake scene. In Brooklyn, Judy Hillerman cooks her husband's dinner, then sits over old magazines making collages while he smokes on the balcony. Allison Burbage and her husband work to hold their own marriage together while raising a ten-year-old son who grows increasingly difficult and strangely self-possessed.
