Plot summary
Murray French lives in a Newfoundland fishing village where the men collect welfare checks and the town has gone eight years without a resident doctor. When he learns a petrochemical company wants to build a factory, he realizes the company insists on a doctor before it will come. The mayor, now working at an airport in St. John's, finds cocaine in the luggage of Paul Lewis, a plastic surgeon, and offers him a deal: a month in the village instead of charges. Murray tells the townspeople the factory depends on keeping Lewis, and the whole harbor sets out to charm him, staging his favorite sport and studying what he likes.
