Plot summary
In 1673, a small shtetl in Lithuania lives under the threat of plague. Rabbi Horrovits urges his son Benjamin to divorce Hanna, seven years after the death of their son and with no child since. Benjamin instead smuggles her a Torah, warning that its Kabbalah has driven men mad. At the wedding of Hanna's pregnant sister Rebecca, men in plague masks appear; the one who leads them, Vladimir, blames the community for the Black Death that spares them, and Perla offers to heal his sick daughter. Hanna argues that the villagers should fight back and build a Golem, and is rebuffed. When she learns Rebecca was attacked and lost the child she carried, Hanna enters the synagogue, finds the seventy-two secret names of God, and shapes a mud figure to protect her people.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Paz Brothers first approached Hani Furstenberg to play Hanna, but she pulled out two hours before she was due to meet them about the role; when they failed to find another actress, they recontacted her and she accepted.
- Instead of the legend's giant creature of mud and clay, the Paz Brothers made their Golem a child, saying that dealing with just a giant monster was not appealing to them and that they preferred character-driven horror.
- The film draws on the legend of the Golem of Prague, which dates back to 1834 and tells of a rabbi who creates a golem to defend the Prague ghetto, only for it to go on a murderous rampage.
- Some crew members were Ukrainian locals who had trouble communicating with the rest of the cast and crew, but the Paz Brothers said the language barrier helped, giving them more time than usual to prepare.
