Plot summary
Lieutenant Ivan Groznykh is given command of a women's air defense unit, and among the soldiers under him is Sergeant Oreshkina, whose sharp tongue and brisk manner make his duties hard. An incident puts the two of them above the front line on a barrage balloon. They come down in German-held territory, on a haystack, and the wind blows the balloon away. German soldiers around them open the neighboring haystacks, which hold anti-aircraft guns.
