Plot summary
Lyudmila, a resident of Poltava, keeps trying on new careers. An audition to be a television announcer fails because of her diction, and her plan to serve as a flight attendant on a Tu-104 does not work out either. She is preparing for the ensemble Ballet on Ice, practicing on roller skates because there is no ice. In the meantime she takes a job at a gas station on the highway between Kyiv and Kharkiv, headed by Panas Petrovich, with Rogneda Karpovna tending the bar. The work goes far from smoothly, and her cheerfulness and resourcefulness are what carry her through it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Gas Station Queen (1963)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The artistic council and most of the crew wanted Nadezhda Rumyantseva for the lead, but the director insisted on little-known Estonian actress Terje Luik. Plenty of footage was shot with Luik before studio management removed her as "too intelligent, cold and introverted," and filming restarted the next year with Rumyantseva.
- Because the lighting equipment was fire-unsafe at the working gas station, the crew built a fake one beside it. It looked so real that a truck driver drove onto the set demanding fuel; actors Rumyantseva, Sova and Vynnyk pretended to refuse and fine him before confessing, and the episode went into the film.
- The film's title was referenced on the second track of American singer Lana Del Rey's debut album, Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant.
