Plot summary
Gary Hart of Colorado finished second to Walter Mondale in the 1984 Democratic primaries and is now the leading contender for the next nomination. As his campaign prepares to launch in April 1987, his staff worry that he talks about ideas and policy but never lets voters get to know him. At The Washington Post, editors debate whether his marriage troubles and rumored womanizing belong in print. Hart spends a first week on the trail, then joins his friend Billy Broadhurst on a yacht trip from Miami to Bimini, where he meets Donna Rice. In Iowa, reporter A.J. Parker asks whether his marriage is traditional, and Hart tells him to follow him around instead. In Miami, Tom Fiedler of the Herald hears from a young woman about Hart and a friend of hers.
