Plot summary
Iris teaches college and writes in Manhattan, and her closest friend and mentor, Walter, has died. At his funeral, Walter's third wife, Barbara, tells her there is something they need to discuss; at her house, Barbara asks Iris to adopt Apollo, Walter's senior Great Dane, at least for now. The dog ignores commands, claims her bed and scatters the notes for a biography of Walter that she has been slow to finish, and her agent, Jerry, presses her to deliver it. The building superintendent, Hektor, warns her about the rules against dogs and reports her, and an eviction notice arrives for her rent-controlled apartment.
