Plot summary
Francis Benoit of LaHonda Research Institute assigns Andy Kasper to design the PC99, a personal computer that has to sell for ninety-nine dollars. Andy leaves a marketing career for the job, and he puts together a team from the unassigned employees at the lab: Salman Fard, who was breaking into CIA files when Andy met him; Curtis, known as Tiny, who is hugely overweight and afraid of other people; and Darrell, who is tall and pierced, avoids germs, guards his personal space and talks about himself in the third person. Andy rents a room in a run-down boarding house, where his neighbor is Alisa, an artist. To reach the price, the four hunt for parts the machine can do without.
