Plot summary
Katia Krafft and Maurice Krafft were a married French couple who made the study of volcanoes their work. They filmed the eruptions and the expeditions they undertook. Their archive of footage is the source for a work designed as a requiem rather than a standard biography. Long sections of that volcano material are set to instrumental and choral music with sparse narration.

- The documentary is a tribute to the French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft, who were killed on 3 June 1991 by a pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen in Japan.
- Herzog had already featured the Kraffts in Into The Inferno and had long wanted to make a film about them; he agreed to direct this one only on the condition that it be a 'requiem'.
