Plot summary

On the back of a milk carton that belongs to her best friend Sarah-Charlotte, Janie Jessmon sees the photograph of a missing three-year-old, Jennifer Sands, and the face in the picture is her own. Janie is sixteen and lives with her parents, Miranda and Frank Jessmon. The carton is part of the search for a child who disappeared years earlier, and the thought that the Jessmons could have taken her is one she cannot escape. She has no way to explain why a missing girl's face should be hers, so with her friend Reeve Shields she begins looking for the Sands family.
