Plot summary

The Dorsey brothers grow up in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, where their father, a coal miner who moonlights as a music teacher, insists that Jimmy and Tommy learn the saxophone and trombone so they will never have to work the mines. The boys resent the long hours of practice and their father's discipline, and their mother, Theresa, thinks he is too hard on them. Their childhood friend Jane Howard likes to sit and watch them play. When their father loses his mining job, he puts together a band with his sons and talks the owner of Gorman's Hall into giving it a chance. By the early 1920s Jimmy, Tommy and Jane are touring as the Wild Canaries, short of money and playing one-night engagements. When their piano player quits, they hire Robert Burton, a movie theater pianist.
