Plot summary
Elizabeth Smart is fourteen and lives in Salt Lake City with her parents and her siblings. Her father Ed brings a handyman who calls himself Immanuel into the house for a remodeling job. Months afterward the man comes back and takes Elizabeth from the bed she shares with her sister Mary Katherine, holding a knife. Too frightened to speak at first, Mary Katherine tells their parents what happened, and a large police investigation follows along with a search effort and heavy news coverage. The family is angered when investigators examine whether one of their own was involved in the disappearance. After a news report said officers suspected someone in the family, Ed takes a polygraph test and passes it. Richard Ricci, dismissed by the Smarts after a jewelry theft, is picked up for a parole violation.
