Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Nadine fights with Darian, her popular older brother, and with Mona, her mother, who worries about appearances. Her father Tom died of a heart attack when she was thirteen, and Krista, her best friend, is the one person who keeps her going. While Mona is away on the Oregon Coast visiting a boyfriend, Nadine and Krista drink heavily at home, and Darian hosts a pool party. In the morning Nadine discovers Krista in bed with him, which puts a strain on the girls' friendship. At school she looks for support from Mr. Bruner, a teacher, and from Erwin, a classmate who likes her, while she tries to catch the attention of Nick Mossman, an older student.
