Plot summary
An object falls from the sky outside a small, isolated town in the Australian desert. The parasite it releases attacks the brain of every creature it reaches, humans included, leaving the people it changes disoriented, unnaturally strong and violent. Whoever touches the object is left lifeless and deformed. Joanne Sharp, a sergeant preparing to return to city police work, wakes to find the outbreak already spreading through her family and friends. With her deputy, a schoolteacher and a scientist, she tries to keep the town's children safe and work out what has come to the town, while the infection spreads faster than anyone can contain it.
