Plot summary
Charlie Thompson introduces himself to Emma Harwood at a Boston café by claiming to have read the book she is reading. She gives no reaction, so he goes back to his seat and later apologizes. Emma explains that one ear is deaf and that she had not heard him, and she lets him try again, which leads to a date. Two years on, they are a week away from their wedding. In a park they catch Pauline, the DJ hired for the reception, smoking heroin. Emma, Charlie, and their best man and matron of honor, Mike and Rachel, debate whether to dismiss her. When Emma says that no one is without fault, the friends begin trading accounts of their worst acts.

The Drama drew criticism for its school-shooting storyline: March for Our Lives, an association led by Parkland shooting survivors, called the film's marketing "misleading", and Tom Mauser, the father of a Columbine High School shooting victim, said it "humanized" school shooters.- Before release, A24 asked editors at The Boston Globe to hold their daily TV Critic's Corner column so an advertisement could run beside the paper's Love Letters romance column; the next day a mock engagement announcement for the film appeared, revealing plot and character details.
