Plot summary
The Colonel runs the office where Simon James has worked for seven years, and Simon goes unnoticed by his boss and by every colleague. Hannah, a co-worker he admires, lives in the apartment opposite his, and he watches her from his own window, retrieving the art she throws out and keeping it. A new employee arrives: James Simon, who has Simon's face exactly and none of Simon's awkwardness, and who quickly gains the respect of everyone in the building. Nobody except James appears to register that the two men are identical, and James, who sees Simon's misery, decides to befriend him.
