Plot summary

Hig, a former mechanic, is among the few survivors left in Erie, Colorado, after a flu pandemic nearly wiped out humanity. He shares an airfield with his dog Jasper and with Bangley, a former Marine turned survivalist. Hig sometimes flies his old propeller aircraft to Denver for fuel and food, and he also takes supplies and mechanical repairs to a Mennonite community nearby, which Bangley dislikes. Two teenage strangers approach the airfield, and Bangley's response from his distant lookout puts him at odds with the more sympathetic Hig. On a flight, Hig picks up a radio signal that appears to come from Grand Junction, Colorado, and suggests people may be alive there. He has caught it several times since the pandemic and always quickly lost contact.
