Plot summary
Five years after comet Clarke destroys civilization, Earth suffers electromagnetic storms, radioactive fallout, and earthquakes. John and Allison Garrity live with their teenage son Nathan in an underground shelter near Thule Air Base in Greenland; Allison helps lead, John works as a scout and engineer, and Nathan wants to become a scout. When earthquakes collapse the shelter, the family evacuates and escapes with Adam Shaw and Dr. Casey Amina, Allison's colleagues, and a few others on an aground lifeboat, barely reaching Liverpool. A superstorm and soldiers guarding another bunker separate the group. In London they learn that the impact crater in southern France is farmed and protected by the military, so the family heads across what remains of Europe to find a new home.
