Plot summary
Long hours at a leading San Francisco hospital leave Jack McKee little time for his wife, Anne, or their son, Nicky, and little patience for the seriously ill patients he treats. He rarely stops to consider what those patients are feeling. In the operating room, he and his partner, Murray Kaplan, chat casually over the procedures. After a charity event, Jack coughs up blood over Anne in the car. A sample of a growth is removed from his throat, and the biopsy shows cancer. The cold, impersonal surgeon Jack sees for the examination shows him what a hospital looks like from the patient's side.
