Robert Elliott

Biography

Robert Elliott was an American character actor of stage and screen. He worked in 102 films and television shows between 1916 and 1951. Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1879, he started in silent films, where he often played main roles, then shifted to supporting parts and bit roles after sound came in. On stage, he created the role of Sergeant O'Hara opposite Jeanne Eagels in Somerset Maugham's Rain in 1922. In 1928 he was Detective Crosby in Lights of New York, which was the first all-talking sound film. For modern viewers, his best known role was a Yankee officer who played cards with Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind. He died in 1951.
