Plot summary
The night before the Normandy landings, Captain Ben Grogan and Sergeant Joe Tane paddle ashore on Forau Island, a fortified German-held Channel Island. Their orders are sabotage: blow up the artillery guns so that German attention stays away from the Normandy landings. The beach is mined, yet no patrols meet them, and the gun stands unguarded. What reaches them instead is screaming from inside the fortification, along with the sound of a man being tortured. A German soldier bursts from the tunnel pleading for help. Grogan and Tane enter the bunker separately among the mutilated bodies of the garrison, and Tane finds a book of black magic. Grogan believes Allied commandos are being held and tortured inside, and he goes deeper to reach them.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's thumbs-and-wire torture scene is based on Adolf Hitler's Commando Order, issued after Operation Basalt, a British Commando raid on Sark during which a German prisoner was shot dead while his hands were tied.
- Director Paul Campion based the story on the German occupation of the Channel Islands and on Guernsey's history of witchcraft, including the "Bad Books" of black magic, copies of which are held in two Channel Islands libraries.
- Grogan's line about "Blondie's men in Bordeaux" refers to the torture of captured Royal Marines during Operation Frankton, under the command of Major Herbert 'Blondie' Hasler.
