Plot summary
Jan Mikolášek, born in 1889, becomes a celebrated and wealthy healer in Czechoslovakia, curing hundreds of people with plant-based remedies. He judges what ails a patient by intuition and by a long acquaintance with herbs, and sets out prescriptions that also cover what the patient eats and how the patient lives. His patients include villagers and many well-known figures, among them the Czechoslovak president Antonín Zápotocký. His methods and his success draw the attention of the Czechoslovak government. Under the Nazi occupation, and again under communist rule, one government after another makes use of his skill and in return grants him protection.
