Plot summary
In thirteenth-century Bohemia, Christianity is displacing the old Pagan ways. Kozlík leads a robber clan from the settlement of Roháček, and his sons Mikoláš and Adam ambush travelers bound for Mladá Boleslav, carrying off a young nobleman named Kristian, who has been chosen as Bishop of Hennau. Kristian's father, a count allied with the Bohemian king, escapes and brings word of the raid to the court. Fearing the king's soldiers, Kozlík prepares his clan for attack and sends Mikoláš to press their neighbor Lazar into a pact. Lazar refuses, and Kozlík's daughter Alexandra grows fond of the captive Kristian while Marketa, Lazar's daughter, prepares to take her vows at a convent.
