Plot summary
Charles is a student in Paris who feels cut off from the people around him. His girlfriend Alberte and his friends, among them Michel, who campaigns for the environment, cannot reach him, and his inner turmoil stays his own. He looks for answers in left-wing politics, in religion and in psychoanalysis. He finds none, and sessions with the psychoanalyst Dr. Mime do nothing to repair his outlook. Intimacy, with Alberte and with an acquaintance he meets by chance, leaves him just as empty. He watches the world with growing unease and horror, and on a bus a passenger asks who is responsible for the state of humanity; another answers that the devil probably is.
