Plot summary
Not yet eighteen years old, Lincoln Bloom mostly lives as a straight teenager in Memphis: a girlfriend, dances, jokes with other guys. He also keeps a secret second life he does not talk about, going to bars and video arcades where he has sex with strangers, and his girlfriend knows nothing about it. In one of those arcades he meets Minh Nguyen, known as John, a Vietnamese-born man in his twenties whose father was an African-American soldier. John invites him to spend some carefree time together. Lincoln leads him to his father's boat, and the two set off down the Mississippi delta.
