Plot summary
Father Amaro, twenty-four and just ordained, is posted to Los Reyes, a small town in the state of Aldama, where he is to assist Father Benito, the local priest. Benito has long been involved with Augustina Sanjuanera, who owns a restaurant, and is building a hospital partly funded by a drug lord. Another priest, Father Natalio, is being investigated over his support for left-wing insurgents. Amelia, Sanjuanera's sixteen-year-old daughter, teaches catechism to the town's children and is considering marriage to Rubén, a young journalist who does not believe. Amaro becomes infatuated with Amelia, and in confession she puts uncomfortable questions to him about sin and love.
