Plot summary
Through her friend Annie Allerton, one of The Circle's most influential employees, Mae Holland lands a customer support job at the tech and social media company. She hopes the work will help her support her father Vinnie, who has multiple sclerosis. At a company meeting, chief executive Eamon Bailey introduces SeeChange, small cameras that can be placed almost anywhere and send live video, presented as a way to make the world more transparent. On campus, other employees push her to fill out her Circle profile, and she meets Ty Lafitte, who is wary of the direction the company is taking. Chief operating officer Tom Stenton brings a congresswoman on stage to talk about opening her daily work to the public, while Mercer, an old friend who lives off the grid, is skeptical of the company.
