Beck

Did you know?!

1. Big break

In 1992, Beck went to Stephenson's home to work together, and the result was "Loser," a slide-sampling hip-hop track that began as a one-off experiment. Beck set it aside and returned to his folk songs and home tapes.

2. First role

Beck began his performing career as a teenager on city buses, playing Mississippi John Hurt covers with improvised lyrics; when a drunk passenger called him Axl Rose, he started singing about Axl Rose, the levee and bus passes.

3. Behind the camera

Beck's 2012 project Song Reader consisted of 20 songs released only as sheet music, so that other musicians could record their own versions; the idea came to him nearly fifteen years earlier, after Odelay.

4. Behind the camera

Beck founded Record Club in 2009, a project in which he and other musicians covered an entire classic album in a single day, starting with The Velvet Underground & Nico.

5. Behind the award

At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, Beck's Morning Phase took home three Grammys, among them Best Rock Album and Album of the Year. It beat out records by Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran.
