Plot summary
The death of Warren, the grandfather who raised him, brings Wall Street trader Will Martin back to his home town. He has not come for sentimental reasons: his aim is to modernize the family's real-estate business, and he is out of step with the Christmas preparations going on around him. His grandmother Ruth tells him at Thanksgiving that she found a woman named Lillian in Warren's journals. Warren wrote of visiting Lillian every Christmas Eve, starting shortly after a car accident killed his son and daughter-in-law. Ruth asks Will to find the woman, and the search takes him through his grandfather's life.
