Plot summary
Tom Langdon writes freelance journalism, mostly light features, and he boards the Christmas Train for the four-day trip to Los Angeles from Washington, D.C., arriving there on Christmas morning. He intends to gather the passengers' stories for a piece honoring his father, who loved trains, while his girlfriend, the actress Lelia, waits in Los Angeles and dislikes that he chose four days of travel over her. Also aboard is the Hollywood filmmaker Max Powers, who brought Eleanor Carter, the script doctor he has relied on for years, from Los Angeles to Washington in the hope that the journey will spark her first screenplay. Tom and Eleanor covered wars together and were once lovers; they parted when she wanted to settle in the States and he would not follow.
