Plot summary
U.S. Army Sergeant Cody Cullen has no family; his father was killed in the Vietnam War. In Afghanistan a fellow soldier hands him a Christmas card that Faith Spelman sent from Nevada City, California, and Cody carries it with him as the months go by. The man who handed him the card dies in the fighting. Weeks before Christmas, Cody travels to Nevada City to find the soldier's fiancée. He is about to leave when he meets Faith in a luncheonette, and the two order the same thing. Driving out of town, he pulls her father, Luke Spelman, clear of a speeding car. Luke persuades him to stay a while and work at the family logging business. Faith's longtime boyfriend Paul, often away, comes to see her.
