Plot summary
Min Li lost her parents in the Tangshan earthquake and travels to a celebrated botanist's home to train. He is a commanding, secretive man who has turned an island into a garden, and he lives there with his daughter, An. The botanist takes Min Li in as a trainee, and An, who has been lonely on the island, is glad of the new arrival. The friendship between the two young women grows into an attraction, and it is one they have to hide. The few men they deal with treat them badly, and the society around them does not accept love between two women.
