Plot summary

Among the Mongol people, festivities have long included three traditional games: wrestling, archery and horse racing. Bold, the town's best horse trainer, gathers the townspeople at his house to make an announcement. He boasts about his horses and his skill, saying nobody in town can match him, and then turns to his most prized animal, a brown steed still waiting for a rider. The neighbors suggest Dambii's eldest son, Dorj, and Bold asks him to ride. Dambii lives out in the countryside with his wife and three sons: Dorj, twelve; Byambaa, eight; and Nanzaa, four. All three have a way with horses, and Byambaa, angry at being passed over, storms off.
