Plot summary
Spring arrives in the Gobi Desert, where a family of nomadic shepherds sees its camel herd through the season's births. The final camel to give birth struggles for two days before, with the family's help, a rare white colt arrives. The shepherds try to bring the pair together, but the mother will not let the newborn nurse or accept it. Lamas are called to perform a rite using dough effigies of the camel, the calf and the people of the household, held at a sacred spot marked by a pole bound in blue cloth. When that fails to mend the bond, the family decides a musician is needed for a Mongolian hoos ritual and sends its two boys on the long ride to the district center to find one.
