Plot summary
Ida Kronenberg moves to another town and is new at the Winterstein School. Helene sees to it that she has few chances to make friends, and the one free seat on the first day is beside Benni, an outsider in the class. Their teacher brings in Mortimer Morrison, who searches the world for magical animals, each meant for one child. Ida and Benni are the first in the class to get companions: the cunning fox Rabbat for Ida, the old, wise turtle Henrietta for Benni. Then things begin to go missing at the school.
