Plot summary
Accounts from survivors, wartime photographs and drawings, and views of the school and the town carry the documentary back to Chabannes, a village in unoccupied France. From 1939 to 1942 more than 400 Jewish children live in a crumbling chateau there, brought from elsewhere by Jewish rescue organizations and taught by the school's director, Felix Chevrier, and his staff. Townspeople and educators describe daily life in the village during the war years and what the arrival of hundreds of children asked of them. The children, their families and two of their aged teachers gather in Chabannes in 1996 for a reunion.
