Plot summary
Keira and Brian Woods have just moved into an old house in the country with their teenage daughter Ellie and their son Steven. The parents are called away to work, and while they are gone the two children explore the cellar, where they find a secret room whose walls are painted and carved with formulas, symbols and artwork. They play a recording in which a man repeats formulas and counts upward, and Ellie switches it off so Steven can go to bed. That night the power goes out, and Ellie telephones her mother, who tells her how to reach the breaker box. Then Ellie acts oddly, and by the time her parents reach home she is gone. The police decide she has run away, as she had done before.
